🌱 What is the EarthLungs Bees Project?
The EarthLungs Bees Project is building and deploying beehives across Kenyan forest planting sites. It’s about so much more than honey — these hives protect forests, encourage biodiversity, and help local communities build sustainable livelihoods.
By supporting beekeeping, this project:

Creates income opportunities for local families, reducing the need for harmful activities like illegal logging or slash-and-burn farming.
🐝 How It Works

Hive Construction – Custom-built beehives are crafted from scratch, even allowing for company logo designs.

Colonisation – The hives are taken to the site and baited with a queen bee, attracting drones, nurse bees, and worker bees to form a thriving colony.

Monitoring – The bees’ health, growth, and numbers are closely monitored to ensure a strong, stable colony.

Final Placement – Once established, the hive is moved to its permanent forest home, where the bees get to work supporting the local ecosystem.
🌸 Why Bees Matter So Much
Bees are nature’s most important pollinators. Their work helps regenerate native plants, creating healthier, more resilient forests. Strong biodiversity supports everything from soil health to clean water — and encourages local people to actively care for their environment.
The presence of hives can even help protect forests from poaching. The activity and buzz around the hives create a natural deterrent to illegal logging or hunting.
🍯 What the Bees Produce
Each hive produces:

Around 20kg of honey a year – a delicious and valuable source of income.

Propolis – a resin with natural anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, used in health and wellness products.

Royal jelly – produced in small amounts (up to 1kg annually), prized for its nutritional and medicinal benefits.
These products help create steady, sustainable income for local families — all while keeping the environment healthy.
